Why Swift Springs Are Different: Frank Simonetti Explains Spring Engineering on Motorhead Garage

We had the pleasure of speaking with Dave Dobson over at Motorhead Garage TV where we had our Motorsports Director Frank Simonetti give a bit of spring tech knowledge as our segment. Big thanks to everyone at the team of Motorhead Garage for setting this up for us and to Piper Kirk who was a major help on getting this started!

A little bit about Motorhead Garage

Masters Entertainment Group's been around for three decades creating high quality television series and programs for a number of major national networks that include MotorTrend, ESPN to Rev TV Canada and more. Their facility utilizes a full gear of professional grade camera equipment where they can develop your ideas to live, post-produced programs or completed series.

Top-rated programs include Motorhead Garage and Tech Garage that's hosted by Dave Dobson. Motorhead Garage shows off new and up-coming products for vehicles that range from UTVs to everyday daily drivers while Tech Garage dives more in-depth about automotive issues showing how each system works.

FAQ

What about the design of your pigtail springs allows you to lower a street vehicle by an inch without sacrificing ride comfort, while also letting track drivers increase spring rates for better handling and cornering?

Our springs are designed to improve both ride quality and handling while allowing you to lower the vehicle’s stance. Through the spring’s design and varying spring rates, we can maintain a comfortable ride for everyday driving while providing significantly more stiffness when increased handling performance is needed. Different spring rates are also available, allowing the suspension to be tailored to the driver’s needs and driving style.

Why Swift Springs Makes its Own Material

Swift Springs is a unique company. We’re actually a metallurgy company that actually makes our own material and when you make your own material you can tailor it to whatever application you need. We’re the only ones in the industry that has the ability to do that and that’s an advantage that we have that sets us apart from everybody.

Spring Color Explanation

Swift Springs uses a patented Thermal Dynamic Transfer process instead of traditional powder coating. The color is infused into the wire material itself, providing corrosion protection and helping extend the life of the spring.

How Does Racing Play in?

We work closely with racing partners across the country to understand their specific needs and use that experience to develop better products for both race cars and street cars.

For example, a spring setup can be designed for a dirt late model circle-track car where it uses two different springs, a lockout nut, and a remote canister that allow us to adjust how the springs move and how quickly they compress and rebound.

A spring has two basic functions: compression, when it collapses, and rebound, when it opens back up. Controlling both is important for proper suspension performance. By combining different spring rates, we can fine-tune how the suspension responds to different driving conditions.

Spring Explanation on Rates

When a spring says it’s 200lb rate spring, it means that it’s 200 pounds per inch. So for every inch of compression the spring gains 200 pounds. Now the rate of the spring never changes but the combined total if you moved it 4 inches and it was a 200lb spring, it’s going to be 800lbs at compression, but it’s still a 200lb spring.

How Spring Sag Can Change your Alignment

A spring that has lost height can do more than lower your car—it can change your suspension geometry, alignment, handling, and tire wear.

When a spring sags, your ride height changes. That can affect camber, toe, suspension travel, and how the tire contacts the road.

For a performance street car, maintaining consistent spring height and a predictable linear spring rate is critical to keeping your suspension working as designed.

In this video, Swift Springs explains why spring sag matters and what racers and performance enthusiasts should look for when maintaining their suspension.

The spring isn't just supporting the car—it helps determine where the entire suspension starts working.
